Treasure Planet follow-up

I did end up finishing the Treasure Planet movie.  There were a couple interesting things that are at least worth noting, so I am glad I did.  Spoilers ahead as I discuss a few things.  This should be a shorter post, though... just trying to call a couple things out quickly.

Stone Men falling into Black Holes

There is a character named Mr. Arrow who is Captain Amelia's first mate. He is a Rock Man, or whatever we would call him.  He is made of Stone.  Here he is:

Just as the Mr. Arrow in Treasure Island disappeared during the voyage to the island, this Mr. Arrow will do likewise on their space voyage. The writers will find a rather peculiar way to do this, however.

Mr. Arrow will disappear through a Black Hole, that was formed rather instantaneously by a supernova. By all accounts, Mr. Arrow was likely incinerated or melted in the process as the Black Hole eventually discharged a massive fire plume (unless he found the Tesseract first!). Here is the scene - Arrow falls in around 3:10. His lifeline was cut by the spider-crab-mix-alien guy (of course it was a spider). {Note:  the link below doesn't allow for viewing off of YouTube, so you can just click on the link in the box and it will take you to the YouTube site where the video is hosted.]

Anyway, I found the detail that a character who is literally a Rock or a Stone falls into the Black Hole intriguing.  The character of Faramir is connected with the Anor Stone/ Elanor, and in talking about Elanor the question has come up about whether we are talking about a Man or a Stone, or both.  Well, here we have both:  a Man made out of Stone.

Interestingly as well, the captain of the ship is named Amelia.   My guess is that this name is a nod to Amelia Earhart, since the captain is a woman and she is the head of a flying ship.  But, I have played another scene on this blog where a woman named Amelia is onboard as a Man falls into a Black Hole.  That was Interstellar, with Amelia and Cooper.  So, for our purposes, we can also perhaps consider this name connected with that scene.  Cooper is another character I have analogized with Faramir, even noting weird details like the age that Amelia says Cooper has reached as they sling around the Black Hole is the same age that Faramir is said to have died at in Tolkien's writings:  120 years old.

In any case, we have two scenes here where either a literal Man of Stone (Mr. Arrow), or one that has been compared with a Stone/ Man (Cooper), falls into a Black Hole while a woman named Amelia is left on board.

Also, in the Interstellar scene, Cooper, and TARS the robot before him, 'detaches' from the main ship.  Both of them will actually say that word as they proceed to fall into the Black Hole.  To detach means to disconnect, or per Etymonline, to become unfastened or untied.  Mr. Arrow in Treasure Planet was also literally detached before going into the Black Hole.  The lifeline that attached him to the boat was severed, though the spider will later make the specific claim that the rope had not been properly secured and so became untied.

I also just realized, going back to the Interstellar scene, that TARS is an anagram for Star.  So, with Cooper and the robot, we have a both a Man and Star (a term I have used interchangeably with a Stone) going into this Hole.  I should have seen that before.

I included the Interstellar scene in the post Black holes, Rabbit holes and walking through stars, but I am re-including it here for kicks:

Lastly, and somewhat randomly, going back to Arrow's name, it is an interesting one in this context, in that arrows fly, first of all, but they are also a standard for 'straightness'.  A common phrase is "Straight as an arrow", which means something like perfectly straight with no deviation, as well as being honest.  The road that we are to follow, perhaps to Tirion, is said to be a straight and narrow one, and also one, as Nephi seems to state, that is accessed by entering through a gate.

A golden ball as a key to a door and other worlds

Once on Treasure Planet, the group of characters will eventually use the golden ball similar to how the Lehites used the Liahona.  It will guide them to where they need to go, but rather than use spindles to point, it will generate a green line in the air that they are supposed to follow.

One of the developments on this blog was when I began comparing the the Stones to Keys.  Once these folks reach the spot where the green line has taken them, Jim will use the golden ball exactly like a key.  The ball is inserted into its place and a giant door in the shape of a triangle is presented to them.  By touching any spot on a mini-map of outer space, the group can travel anywhere they would like to.  Jim specifically says at one point "It's a great, big door.  Opening and closing", and then later "Just open the right door".

So, we have something analogous to the Anor Stone/ Liahona not only leading the group to where they need to go, but also acting as a key that unlocks or opens a door or a sort of star gate.

Apologies for the quality of the following video, but the only shot of the scene I could find on YouTube was one that it looks like someone just used their cell phone to record.

  1. Speaking of rock men, doesn’t the titular treasure belong to Captain Flint?
